The commemoration of the 45th Death Anniversary of former Speaker, Late Hon. Shirley Corea will be held on the 9th of March at 2.30 p.m. at the Parliamentary Premises under the patronage of Prime Minister, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe and Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Karu Jayasuriya.
Hon. Shirley Corea was a former Speaker of Parliament who served from 1967 to 1970. He entered Politics in 1954 by contesting the Chilaw seat from the United National Party and was made the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Fisheries. He held many Ministries during his tenure and was elected the Speaker of Parliament in the year 1967. He was known as a Speaker who maintained the highest level of integrity and impartiality. Shortly after his retirement in 1970, he passed away in 1974.
