The inaugural session of the Student Parliament of St. Aloysius College, Ratnapura, was recently (Oct. 30) held at the school's main hall with the presence of Mr. Chaminda Kularatne, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. This program, jointly organized by the school and the Department of Communications of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, aimed to bring students closer to the values of democracy and offer practical experiences on parliamentary procedures.
Delivering the keynote address, the Deputy Secretary General provided an overview of the parliamentary process, its functions, and operational mechanisms. He emphasized the importance of acquiring a comprehensive understanding of parliamentary procedures during the school years to help develop systematic approaches for addressing societal issues. The principal of St. Aloysius College, present at his event, highlighted the significance of implementing the knowledge gained through the Student Parliament and the value such initiatives bring to student development within the school system.
The inaugural session included a range of practical procedures, such as the election of the Speaker of the Student Parliament, the swearing-in of members, and presentations by student parliamentarians on their plans and proposals relevant to various ministries.
During the event, official insignias were pinned on student representatives, certificates were awarded, and books were donated to the school library.
