The inaugural session of the Student Parliament of Kadawatha Central College was held recently (Oct 29) at the College main auditorium.
This program, organized jointly by the school and the Communications Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, aimed to provide students with practical insights into parliamentary procedures while bringing the values of democracy closer to the school community. The event was attended by the principal of Kadawatha Central College, Mr. R.M. Gunaratne.
During the session, Ms. Umanga Panditha, Principal Officer of the Legislative Services Department of Parliament, delivered an overview of parliamentary functions and responsibilities, explaining how the Parliament operates. She highlighted the importance of students gaining a foundational understanding of parliamentary procedures during their school years, which could enable them to approach societal issues in an organized and systematic manner. Principal Mr. R.M. Gunaratne adding to the said emphasized the value of the application of the practical knowledge gained by participating in the Student Parliament.
Following the said, the Speaker of the Student Parliament was elected, and the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, and Members of Parliament were sworn in. Each student minister presented their ministry’s proposed plans and initiatives to the House.
During the event, student representatives were ceremonially adorned with official insignias.
The program was attended by assistant principals, Mr. M.D.P.S. Gunathilake, Mr. R.W.L. Jayawardena, Ms. M.V.P. Swarnarekha of the Kadawatha Central College along with teachers, students, and parents.
