A knowledge session for Members of Parliament on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Sri Lanka's progress on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the challenges and opportunities to accelerate progress was held yesterday (June 05) under the patronage of the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Ajith Rajapakse at the Parliament Premises.
The Session was attended by Members of Parliament from different political parties represented in Parliament and the technical presentation was made by the Director General of Sustainable Development Council, Mrs. Chamindry Saparamadu.
The Deputy Speaker Hon. Ajith Rajapaksa said that the entire development process may be affected due to propaganda carried against the implementation of development projects in the country. Therefore, the Deputy Speaker emphasized the need to carry out development projects under proper management.
The Deputy Speaker also emphasized that the people of the country will have to experience the negative results by highlighting the minor gaps in development projects as major ones. He mentioned that such adverse situations arose due to widespread misconceptions about the Uma-Oya and Colombo Port City projects.
Ms. Chamindri Saparamadu, Director General of the Sustainable Development Council informed the members about the challenges faced in achieving the sustainable development goals by the year 2030 and the steps to be taken to achieve them.
The Members of Parliament who participated in the workshop pointed out that since the country is facing an economic crisis, the actions to achieve these sustainable development goals should be revised. The role of Parliament in achieving these sustainable development goals was also discussed.
The session was organized in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Council and the Public Outreach Section of the Department of Communication of Parliament of Sri Lanka. Officials including the Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of Parliament, Mr. Chaminda Kularathne were also present on the occasion.
