Supreme Court permits to destroy 100 kilos of drugs – Ministry of Justice disclose at the Select Committee of Parliament to control and eradicate the rapidly spreading drug menace in the country

  • Proposals and public comments received from government institutions regarding the methods to be implemented to immediately control and eradicate the drug menace, tabled

 

The Ministry of justice stated before the Select Committee of Parliament to look into and identify the mechanisms to be implemented in order to immediately control and eradicate the rapidly spreading drug menace in the country and to submit observations and recommendations to Parliament in that regard, that the Supreme Court has granted permission to destroy 100 kilos of drugs and accordingly dates are set to destroy the said.

This was discussed when the Select Committee of Parliament met in Parliament recently (Dec. 12) under the Chairmanship of the Hon. Tiran Alles, Minister of Public Security.

Furthermore, proposals and public comments received from government institutions regarding the methods to be implemented to immediately control and eradicate the drug menace received by the committee by December 12th, 2023 were tabled in this Select Committee of Parliament and a copy was given to all the institutions and individuals present.

Accordingly, the Select Committee of Parliament emphasized that the proposals and public comments received by the said Committee should be further analyzed and further discussed.

The Attorney General's Department made a presentation on the existing gaps and difficulties in the arrests related to drug use and distribution and related judicial process.

The Committee further discussed that due to the existing weaknesses in the judicial process after drug-related arrests, even large-scale drug traffickers are escaping the law, so proper policy and legal remedies should be applied.

State Minister Hon. (Dr.) (Mrs.) Seetha Arambepola, Members of Parliament Hon. Jayantha Samaraweera, Hon. (Dr.) Upul Galappaththi, Hon. Buddhika Pathirana, Hon. (Mrs.) Manjula Dissanayake and Hon. (Mrs.) Muditha Prishanthi were present at this Committee meeting held.
