Several institutions attached to the Ministry of Investment Promotion called before the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Increasing Export of Goods & Services

Several institutions affiliated     to the Ministry of Investment Promotion called before the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Increasing Export of Goods & Services to get ideas for improving the export of goods and services in Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, the Export Development Board, Investment Board, two institutions related to Colombo Port City, officials of the Techno Park project and Sri Lanka Sugar Private Limited were called before this Committee.

These groups were called before the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Increasing Export of Goods & Services when the Committee met in Parliament recently (Nov. 30) under the Chairmanship of Member of Parliament Hon. Buddhika Pathirana.

Addressing the Committee, the Committee Chair, Member of Parliament Hon. Buddhika Pathirana inquired about the role of the Export Development Board and the plans prepared for the next two years. The officials representing the Export Development Board pointed out that the main task of this board is to promote exports. Furthermore, the plan prepared for the next few years was presented to the Committee by way of a presentation.

Moreover, the officials present pointed out that among the goods mostly exported from Sri Lanka, products related to the apparel industry take priority and pointed out that due to the cost incurred for the production of goods in Sri Lanka at present, it is difficult for local garments to face the competition in the foreign market. Due to this, it is important to reduce the expenses for electricity, water and transportation, the officials pointed out.

Discussions were held with two institutions related to the Colombo Port City, as well as with the officials of the Techno Park project and with the officials of the Sri Lanka Sugar Pvt. Ltd. regarding the existing problems and future proposals.

Members of Parliament Hon. K. Sujith Sanjaya Perera Hon. B. Y. G. Rathnasekara were present at the Committee meeting held.
