The First Regional Conference of the Parliamentary Committee on Communal and Religious Harmony in Sri Lanka was successfully conducted on the 06th of August 2018 from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. in the Mahaweli Reach Hotel ,Kandy with the leadership of the Hon.Speaker of Parliament and the participation of Most Ven. Maha Nayaka and Anu Nayaka theros, most venerable clergy belonging to all the religions, the Ministers and Members of Parliament representing all the political parties and the government officials of higher grades.
Many topics with a regional importance on the Communal and Religious Harmony of Sri Lanka were subjected to discussion in this conference which was conducted under the theme “National and Religious Harmony towards Sustainability of Sri Lanka”, and the Key note speech was made by Prof. Upul Dissanayake, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya.
The Hon. speaker of Parliament, addressing the gathering, stated that all the arrangements have been already made to establish a ‘Parliamentary Select Committee’ under his chairmanship in the near future, having properly studied the suggestions and proposals which were presented in the previous conferences to the effect that a ‘Parliamentary Select Committee’ be established to ensure National and religious harmony. This committee will undertake the responsibility of conducting studies relevant to ensuring religious and national harmony in Sri Lanka and making the required recommendations to Parliament based on the studies conducted.
Provincial and regional level political elite representing the Central Province, certain public officers and the Acting Secretary General of Parliament also participated at the event.
