Main Business of the House for Today

The following Motions (appearing as Item No. 1 to 5 of today’s Order Paper) were moved and agreed by the House:-

1. Granting Agricultural Loans to farmers who are self employed in Agriculture

That this Parliament resolves that farmers who are self employed in agriculture be granted Agricultural Loans to a maximum of Rs. 2,50,000 at a reduced Interest Rate of 5%.

2. Developing the Santhenkerny Public Playground in the Kalmunai Town

That this Parliament resolves that the Santhenkerny Public Playground be developed in all aspects as an International Sports Ground with a view to providing advanced facilities for the youth of Digamadulla District to improve their skills and ability in the various aspects of sports.

3. Appointment of a Presidential Commission combining the Judiciary, the Police and the Prison

That this Parliament resolves that a Presidential Commission be appointed combining the Judiciary, the Police and the Prison with the objective of minimizing crimes spreading in the society, to improve criminal laws by minimizing shortcomings, to dispose of backlog of cases including land matters piled up in courts and to provide a speedy service by modernizing the Judiciary, the Police and the Prison.

4. Providing vocational training for disabled children and children with special needs

That this Parliament resolves that the disabled children and the children with special needs be provided with vocational training at district and provincial levels and a programme should be implemented to direct them in proper manner to employment opportunities.

5. Increasing annual interest rate for fixed deposits of senior citizens up to 14 %

That this Parliament resolves that the annual interest rate for fixed deposits of Rupees 15 lakhs or less of senior citizens be increased up to 14 %, as most of the senior citizens who are spending the evening of their life after rendering a considerable service for the country in corporations, boards, authorities and the private sector, live on the interest received on their savings and provident fund that they had deposited in fixed deposits, have been put into great inconvenience due to the lowered interest income received for the fixed deposits of senior citizens as a result of bringing down the annual interest rate of state banks up to 10.5 %.

Motion at the Adjournment Time on "Farmers pension scheme: increase benefits" was moved by the Hon. Sunil Handunneththi.


The Parliament was, thereafter adjourned at 1836 Hrs. until 1300 Hrs. on Wednesday 25th May 2011.
