Hon. (Mrs.) Hiruni Wijesinghe, Attorney at Law,—To ask the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education,— (1)
(a) Will she inform this House —
(i) of the total number of students studying at all the faculties of the University of Colombo at present;
(ii) of the number of those who have been provided with hostel facilities out of the students referred to above;
(iii) whether she accepts that a considerable number of students are not getting hostel facilities accordingly; and
(iv) of the number of hostels possessed by the University of Colombo, and of their names and of the number of those as per the categorization of female, male and mixed hostels, separately?
(b) Will she also inform this House—
(i) whether she is aware that the land in Colombo 02, where the “Muttiah” Girls' Hostel, which provided hostel facilities to around 800 female students of the University of Colombo, had been located, was taken over in the year 2020;
(ii) of the name of the entity which currently has possession of the land where the aforesaid hostel was located;
(iii) whether she is aware that no development work has been carried out there although more than 05 years has lapsed after the demolishing of the said hostel; and
(iv) if so, whether the entire land or a portion thereof will be returned to the University of Colombo?
(c) If not, why?
