PARLIAMENT

The Select Committee on SDGs was established through a motion on 25 October 2016.  Hon. Karu Jayasuriya appointed Hon. Thilanga Sumathipala as the Chairman of the Select Committee.  The Committee consists of 14 other Members of Parliament.

The Government of Sri Lanka is committed to work towards the UN 2030 Agenda for SDGs. The Parliament will play a vital role at the forefront through its law-making, budgeting and oversight functions.   The Select Committee of the Parliament of Sri Lanka on SDGs has been mandated to make recommendations to ensure that the UN 2030 Agenda for SDGs is achieved in Sri Lanka.

World’s partner engaged in global development UNDP is partnering with the Sri Lanka Parliament’s Select Committee for Sustainable Development Goals by providing technical knowledge and training of Members of Parliament.

The guidelines stipulated by the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) Tool Kit specifically designed for the SDGs will be used as the guidelines for the success of the Select Committee on SDGs to achieve its objectives. IPU is the global inter-parliament institution, which works to make parliaments more effective in fulfilling their government oversight and legislative roles, in guaranteeing people's rights and liberties and in securing peace and development.
